A Few Words About Our Departments and Projects

Our departments work together to preserve and share documents, realia, and sound recordings that either provide information about the history of Elms College or offer significant research potential. Most materials are photographs and rare or collectible books. Many of these materials contribute to Elms’ unique Catholic identity.

Prior to the arrivals of recent Library Director and College Archivist Anthony (Tony) Fonseca and Visiting Head of Special Collections Melissa Ursula Dawn Goldsmith,  Archives and Special Collections were archived and indexed by Sister Mary E. Gallagher, SSJ.

Currently, several projects are taking place. These include cataloging and preserving rare books, becoming involved in Digital Commonwealth (Boston Public Library, in collaboration with the Internet Archive, is digitizing a few of our rare books, earliest year books, photographs, and college correspondence), actively collecting and preserving sound recordings, and creating The Elm Tree. The digitization was a result of Fonseca and Goldsmith’s 2013 and 2014 efforts to obtain three mini-grants through Digital Commonwealth.

One of the byproducts of these projects is to restore the Rare Book Room at Alumnae College, so it can be used by appointment for researching materials in these collections. Another is to create a search interface for the Alumnae Library’s various resources that is both user-friendly to the new college student as well as highly interesting to the most seasoned scholar. The efforts here have the goal of making both departments’ materials accessible for and by researchers.
