About This Project

In 2013, The Elm Tree, the research interface for Alumnae Library at Elms College, was created by Melissa Ursula Dawn Goldsmith. Reaching beyond the goals of other research interfaces for Archives and Special Collections, the creative impetus behind this research interface was started from scratch by Goldsmith, who envisioned a research interface that would appeal to undergraduates as well as seasoned scholars. Within less than a year’s time of her visiting term as Head of Digital Special Collections and Technical Services, Goldsmith constructed the architecture of The Elm Tree and completed the search interface’s site navigation. The site’s architecture and writing, while keeping the green of Elms’ colors, is robust enough for meeting W3C Standards for HTML5. It is built in such a way to be sustainable for years to come as Alumnae Library continues to maintain it. Materials by Goldsmith, including essays and photographs, under copyright protection, will remain on the page.
